"A four year old child thrown into a war over something that happened long ago, with no allies not even parents. I told you that my version of it was rare, but I didn't tell you you were looking at the only one left alive..." She wasn't crying but based on how shaky the hand on her right shoulder was her companion certainly understood. 'It was only five years, surely you've had far more time than that to watch everything suddenly collapse then be built up again...'
"It's a bit odd how most of the time when I tell the truth it sounds like a lie... You only saw it for a moment, the way I twist reality just a little to lie without saying anything." Twice she had lied to him, several times she had skidded around thin ice, and once she had avoided his questioning if only for a little.

"I think, that because you lie so much, its become more normal in your mind to lie than tell the truth, so when you tell the truth, it feel how a lie should feel for normal people. I feel sorry for you, growing up like that. I spent a lot of my youth without my parents, but I was haunted with the guilt of their absence, so I can understand that. I also know what it's like to be the only freak of your kind... You and I are not so different..." Bill said, drifting off, his voice shaking a little, his hand gripping a little harder on his companion's shoulder. He wasn't sure if it was to comfort her, or himself. He never knew what to do to comfort people, but he always tried. Most of the time it just pissed people off, but their attacks against him helped get them back on their feet. But now he started to notice something. "The lies... Hmm... Interesting."

Not saying anything Kano turned enough to look at him. Glad it was her right he was squeezing so tightly, the hilt of her blade rested on the other shoulder. "When I do have to draw my blade, the reaction is always a bit funny. I'm not sure if it's because I avoid using it unless absolutely necessary, or because I have to draw it through my hood."
'I'm a girl, and an orphaned clockmaker. So there is certainly difference.' Tuono could see them now and was running across the sand, his mrring noises louder and more rythmic. Shifting her head to look at the cat the girl provided a small grin. "Hey Tuono."

"Violence should never be easy... But what's with that? Why'd ya bring that up?" Bill asked as the tom trotted down the beach towards them. "Oh Tuono, I was worried you didn't follow me out of the room and got locked in." He turned away from the sea to grin at the cat, almost no sign he had been crying moments before. It took a second or two after this before he realized he was still squeezing Kano's shoulder, quickly letting go, trying to make it natural by lowering his hood in the same motion.

Kano gestured to his hand that had been on her shoulder, "It occurred to me that it you'd been on the other side you would have been holding the hilt against my shoulder is all." Tuono provided Bill with a blank stare before glaring at his owner. The shifter glared back, both breaking it at the same time, just as they always did.
"Even if you had locked him in he would have gotten out." Tuono meowed in confirmation, sitting down and licking his fur. Sitting up the clockmaker eyed the hawk above, trying to discern whether it was going to try and take her cat or not.

"I see, well I'm glad I didn't do that..." Bill glanced up to see what Kano was looking at. He saw the hawk, and then glanced back at Tuono. "I'm sure he would have, but why make him go through the extra effort, eh?" He stared at the tom, wondering just how smart it really was.

Tuono stopped, eying Bill he took the stare as a challenge. "Rao." Looking back down the shifter grinned at him, pulling the feline onto her lap and affixing a harness on him. Sliding a note and some money into the pouch by his neck and wrapping some cord around the circular platform on his back Kano grinned. "The usual, okay?" "Rao."
With a lopsided grin she watched the cat run off, "I think you'll like it when he gets back." Her airy laughter made her fall back into the sand, it wasn't to long until she sat up again, mindful of the machinery and tools on her. "He can't pick a lock but either the door opens or the window dies. Sometimes he tears up the bed or goes under the door, but that's very rare."

"Smart cat..." Bill muttered, a half smile touch his lips when he heard her laugh. "She can change moods almost as quick as me. She sure is... interesting. Tell me Bill, what are we thinking? Just ask if you care that much." He sat there deep in thought for several long moments, before finally he blurted out. "Do you enjoy lying?" There he went again. He was just waiting for the verbal or physical backlash. At least he wasn't talking about her body again. And now he was thinking about it again. He waited for a storm.

Kano froze, her usually fast mind suddenly unable to move. "No. I know some do, but I never have. The knowledge that I'm twisting perception and providing false information that is so readily accepted was never something I've liked. When I was smaller I didn't know how to stop or even manipulate it past what was instinctual, just that it was false and that was wrong."
Her currently golden eyes scanned carefully awaiting response. She certainly felt guilty, and most of the time she couldn't stop it. The shifter having forced it down just as Bill exited the inn was taxing and most of the time just randomly canceling it out or shattering it was painful. Lying in the way others did was even worse, but she did it through the illusion never once giving her real opinion on the matter. Kano had spoken to him behind the lies before, laughing and pretending he could respond to what he didn't know... "I understand lying... I know it well, but I can never understand how anyone would enjoy it."

"Good. That means you're still human. And it means I can trust you, at least a bit." Bill said as he pulled his hood on again. "Sorry, I shouldn't have asked like that, but I've been betrayed, and worked with some really foul people before. Now, I wouldn't even call them human. You have a power that can be used in a lot of different ways. I want to make sure they don't get me killed, or worse." The mage stood up again, holding his coat breast pocket. "Still here, good..."
"I don't normally say this kind of thing, but I realize I've been asking all the questions. It's fair if you want to ask a few back." Bill told her, not looking down. "What did you go and say that for idiot? Since when have you become noble? I've let you be a gentleman from time to time, I've let you be mostly sane lately, but what's with this? Right and wrong? Fair? You've spent years training against that kind of thinking... Oh, you've been talking to her again. She's dead because..." His mind was rambling, he needed to focus, he needed to be ready for questions, he needed to be ready to run, and to fight. "Of course, I'm a horrible conversationalist, as you've come to learn. So ya know, ya don't have to..." He said with a stiff cough.

"I'd prefer to learn as I go. If you feel there is anything I should know feel free to tell." Her eyes remained carefully tracking, she was also very tense, something not useful for what she'd be doing later. Yes, tonight she would be working on the clocktower. Dangerous most definitely, but if done during the day the chaos it would cause was very much something unwanted by the shifter.
Kano turned, her furry companion had returned, a bag carefully strapped onto the platform atop his bag and the pouch on his neck containing another note. Picking at the not carefully the girl removed the bag and notes before sliding the harness off Tuono and placing it within her coat. She quickly read over the note before opening the bag and removing several small packages. Sliding the long thin one towards the cat she held one out to Bill. "Want one? They're fresh sweet-rolls from the bakery back within the town. Tuono went and got them, as well as some sort of fish for himself."

What to tell her. She wasn't in danger, but did she deserve to know? "I think I should tell you a couple things. For now though I ask that you don't question the reasons why. The first, I don't sleep. Don't need it, can't do it. Second, I don't need food or water. I have... medicine that I take, and that's all. I still like to eat, but I don't need to. I only tell you this so that you don't waste anything on me that you need. With that out of the way, I'd love a sweet-roll!" Bill said with a grin, lowering his hood and grabbing a roll, taking a big bite out of it.
"Did she need to know that? Probably not, but if nothing else, it'll be a test. We'll see how much she can figure out from this." The alchemist thought to himself, giving Tuono a few pets in thanks for making the trip into town. "Really is a smart cat..." He muttered.

Kano laughed in response, grabbing the other one and consuming it with speed and efficiency that could only belong to a child. "Well since you don't sleep you should know that I'm not going to be at the inn tonight. So don't panic and start threatening to kill Tuono unless he shows you were I am or something." There were three rolls left but the shifter of all people did not need the sugar.
Tuono purred at Bill before tearing open the wrapping that surrounded the fish. His owner glanced over at it, for a moment trying to figure out what kind of fish it was, before giving up and grabbing another roll. She also moved one of the other two closer to her not-so-fuzzy companion in order to make it clear he could take it.

"Got a job already? That seems fast, and odd for nighttime. Unless of course it isn't a job..." Bill said with a grin, quickly stuffing his face with the final couple of rolls. He might not need them, but he still loved them, and it helped him still feel human. Something still felt off to him, but it could simply be how uncomfortable he felt in this coat now. Still, he figured there was no reason to worry, and Kano didn't seem bothered by what he told her. Granted she didn't know the how, or she might have a very different tune.

"If I did it during the day there would be problems. Also I said before work is pretty much garinteed for me, I'm just lucky these people didn't already know me. I would've been yanked from place to place as soon as I finished." Eying the fish the cat was tearing apart she mumbled to herself, "Too late to find out what he's eating now."
Kano stood and made to head back, turing to Bill just before stepping back onto the cobbles she spoke. "I mean it, don't threaten to kill my cat. Also I'm headed back to bother the tailors again."
